Last week Thursday we had a special tasting with RIEDEL Vinum stemware at Creation Wines in cooperation with Platter’s South African Wine Guide. We tried to find out how the glass influences the taste of the wine.
If somebody knows the Creation wines he might claim that these wines will taste great in any glass. I absolutely agree, but can the glass make the wine taste even better?
For the tasting we used 4 varietal specific RIEDEL Vinum glasses (From left to right: Sauvignon Blanc, Montrachet/Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon glass) and a standard Bohemia tasting glass. We also had a polystyrene cup, but I think that was only to show that even the material makes a huge difference.
First we tasted the Creation wines in the varietal specific RIEDEL glass, then we poured it into the standard tasting glass and tasted it again. The difference was really amazing. The RIEDEL glass defines the sensation of bouquet, texture, flavour and finish of the wine in a perfect way. It creates a better mouthfeel and a balanced interaction between the fruit, minerality, acidity and bitter components of a wine. Even the aftertaste is more pleasant, seamless, harmonious, and long lasting.
If you are still sceptic if a good glass make the wine taste better join Creation Wine for a RIEDEL tasting. www.creationwines.com

ABOUT RIEDEL:
RIEDEL CRYSTAL (established 1756) has been producing glass in the heart of Europe for over 250 years and for eleven generations. In the late 1950’s, Claus J. Riedel was the first person in history to introduce and develop wine-friendly stemware. Wine-friendly stemware translates and delivers the bouquet, texture, flavour and finish of a wine to the senses. Soon he recognized the correlation of wine glass design and grape varieties. Based on these perceptions and the Bauhaus design principle of “form follows function” the Austrian Riedel Wine Glass Company developed the first grape varietal specific stemware line in 1973. These finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of 3 variables: shape, size and rim diameter.
